How to Choose the Right Wedding Photographer for You in Melbourne

You might see the term "Best photographer" bandied around a lot - But "best" doesn't actually mean much on its own, best for who, best at what, best compared to whom? What actually matters is finding the right fit for you and your day, and that's a genuinely answerable question, even if "best" isn't.

Here's how I'd actually go about it, and I'd say the same thing to a couple who ended up booking someone else entirely.

Start with style, not reviews

Reviews come second. Style comes first, because no amount of glowing testimonials will make you happy with a gallery that doesn't look like what you wanted. Are you after natural and candid, or classic and posed? Bright and colourful, or moody and dark? Look through full real wedding galleries, not just curated highlight reels, and be honest with yourself about what you're actually drawn to versus what you think you should like.

Then check for consistency, not just talent

Anyone can take one stunning photo. The real question is whether that quality holds up across an entire gallery, in bad light, in a crowded reception, with a wedding party of twelve or no wedding party at all. Ask to see full galleries from more than one wedding, ideally ones with different venues and different weather, that's where consistency actually shows.

Read reviews for patterns, not star ratings

Five stars tells you almost nothing on its own. What matters is what people are actually saying, over and over. If dozens of reviews independently mention the same specific thing, feeling comfortable, feeling like a friend was there rather than a hired vendor, that's a real, verified pattern, not marketing copy. Look for specifics too, a photographer who handled a sudden storm, or made a camera-shy groom relax, tells you more than a generic "amazing, highly recommend."

Actually talk to them before you book

A quick call or Zoom tells you things a website never will. Do you get on? Can you imagine spending eight hours of your wedding day with this person nearby? Photography is one of the only vendors who's genuinely with you the entire day, so personal fit matters here.

Match their pricing to your actual day, not the other way around

A good photographer should be able to have an honest conversation with you about what coverage your specific wedding actually needs, and build a package around that, rather than pushing you toward whatever their most profitable tier happens to be.

The honest bit

There isn't one "best wedding photographer in Melbourne." There's a right one for a couple who wants moody, dramatic portraits and a formal, traditional day. There's a different right one for a couple eloping at the registry office who wants candid, unposed, joy-filled chaos. Both of those photographers might be excellent at what they do and completely wrong for each other's couples. The work isn't finding the best, it's finding the one whose best matches what you actually want.

If bright, honest, unposed and genuinely fun sounds like your kind of day, I'd love to chat and find out if I'm the right fit for you. And if I'm not, I'll tell you that too.
