If you're googling "Melbourne Registry Office wedding" at 11pm trying to work out whether this whole thing is actually doable, short answer: yes. Long answer: absolutely yes, it's not only doable but downright delicious and dapper, and honestly one of my favourite kinds of day to photograph. I've shot enough registry office weddings now that I've picked up a few things worth passing on.

Book your ceremony slot early

The Melbourne Registry Office fills up fast, especially weekends. Once you've got a date in mind, lock in your ceremony time as early as you can, then build everything else around it. Weekday ceremonies are worth genuinely considering too, easier to book, usually quieter, and honestly just as special.

Worth thinking about time of day and time of year too, not just what's actually available. Light matters more than people expect. Midday sun in summer is harsh, and you'll pick up green reflections bouncing off every bit of grass and foliage nearby, not the look you want. Aim for a later afternoon ceremony in summer, one that leads nicely into a delicious dinner. In winter, go early to mid afternoon instead, that gives us proper time for family shots and portraits before the light disappears on you.

The ceremony itself is short, and that's not a bad thing

Short doesn't mean small on feeling though. I've photographed rooms with seven people in them where there wasn't a dry eye by the time the paperwork was signed.

Depends on the room. The smaller Thomas Hyde Room fits around 8 guests, while the larger Margaret Craig Room can take up to 55, so you'll need to have a bit of a guest list together before you book. Registry weddings tend to suit smaller, more intimate guest lists by nature either way, some of the loveliest days I've shot have also been the smallest, four or five people total. I've been so bloody chuffed on a couple of occasions when the guest list was so small that I ended up as one of the official witnesses, you need two, both over 18, so if your numbers are tight, that's worth knowing well before the day rather than working it out on the steps.

Where to take photos afterwards

We're so damn lucky in Melbourne, the registry office building itself is stunning, and it's surrounded by gorgeous parks on one side and proper urban delights on the other. You genuinely don't need to go far:

Treasury Gardens and Fitzroy Gardens are both a short walk from the Registry Office and give you that lush, green backdrop.
The Conservatory in Fitzroy Gardens specifically gets you a soft, romantic setting, that peachy-coloured beauty of a building is a photo in itself, and it doubles as an easy, unmissable landmark to meet at if you're doing a first look before the ceremony.
Parliament House steps are a genuine favourite of mine for that grand, city-meets-history look, especially if you can time it for golden hour, and it gives us an undercover option if we're contending with the weather goddess. Worth knowing it can turn into a bit of a mosh pit on weekends though, plenty of other newlyweds have the same idea, so I've got a few backup wet-weather spots up my sleeve too, just in case lining up alongside a dozen other couples isn't quite how you pictured your day.
Honestly, even just walking through the CBD works. Couples have made a stop at Moat part of their day, ended up at Hyde Melbourne Place, or squeezed in a burger and chips stop between Treasury Gardens and their photo walk. Melbourne's laneways and cafes are part of the city's whole thing, use them. I've done this enough times now that I've got a proper list of go-tos to suit whatever you two are actually into, ice cream, cocktails, a good bookstore, whatever it is, let's make the photos feel like the two of you, not just another stock Melbourne backdrop.

How much photography coverage do you need?

Most couples fit everything they need into a two hour package. That's usually enough for a first look, photos before the ceremony, the ceremony itself, family photos afterwards, and a quick walk to a nearby venue to wrap things up. It's more than people expect can fit into two hours, but it genuinely does.

If you're after more, extra reception coverage, getting ready photos beforehand, that kind of thing, we can just add hours onto that base package. Best way to land on the right number is to actually talk it through, tell me exactly what you want covered and I'll give you an honest answer on how many hours you'll realistically need, not just talk you into more than you'll actually use. But plenty of couples get exactly what they need from the two hour option, so don't feel like you need to book more than that just in case. Every couple I've shot has done it slightly differently, which is honestly the best thing about a registry wedding, there's no set formula, just the bits that matter to you.

It doesn't have to be one day either

Some of my favourite registry weddings have been part of something bigger. Nin and Morgan turned theirs into a full long weekend, registry ceremony one day, vintage tennis and a picnic the next, a proper reception the day after that. The registry bit was still where it all started, everything else was just cherries on their wedding cake so to speak.
