If you're thinking about getting married at the Melbourne Registry Office in winter, let me tell you about Sam and Trav's day. Beautifully simple, properly sweet, and honestly a bit of a masterclass in how to do a winter city elopement right.

They got ready together at Lanson Place Parliament Gardens, just around the corner from the Registry Office, which meant no stressful drive across town watching the light disappear. Trav got dressed first and headed down, then Sam got herself sorted so we could still sneak in a first look just outside the hotel before we went anywhere near a guest list. There's something about a first look on a quiet footpath that just hits different. No aisle, no audience, just the two of them and a whole lot of feeling.

From there we took the scenic route. Winter ceremonies mean you're racing the sun (sunset was 5.07pm and their ceremony was set for 4:15), so I always tell couples getting married this time of year: do your portraits and your first look beforehand. Don't leave it to chance after the "I do". We walked, made sure the route actually made geographical sense, and landed at the Registry Office with time to spare.

Can we talk about those steps for a second? The cityscape behind you, that grand old facade, it's one of my favourite backdrops in Melbourne for a walking-in-to-get-married shot. We used it for family photos too, right alongside Treasury Gardens, which gave us a proper green backdrop about thirty seconds' walk from the CBD traffic. Efficient and gorgeous. The ceremony itself was brief, the way registry office ceremonies tend to be, but no less full of feeling for it. Cuddles and congratulations happened out on the steps afterwards, then we sent the guests off ahead of us towards Moat, the little Italian spot tucked into the CBD, while we strolled together at a slower pace, allowing for some shots and some breathing space. By the time we caught up, everyone was already deep into good food, good wine, and the kind of mingling that happens when a wedding doesn't try to be anything other than what it is.

Sam and Trav's day was proof that a wedding doesn't have to be complicated to feel completely like you. Just a hotel doorway, a decent walk, some steps with a view, and a restaurant full of people who love them.
